Closing time

Hi gangsters!

After 8 years, 69 days and 8994 posts I am closing this blog down for further postings.

On the behalf of myself and my beloved friends of the PCL Team I now say goodbye. It is time. This blog no longer serves any purpose whatsoever.

Our Facebook page, however, will remain and hopefully continue to spread that good stuff!

Except for the obvious gratitude towards my companions of The PCL Elite (You know who you are!) I would like to especially thank Ange who more or less on her own kept this blog alive and kicking for years.

Auf wiederschnitzel!

/Z aka Mr. Dante Fontana.

Update: Note that the link to our fb page was wrong when I posted this. Now it has been corrected.

Strip Along With Us

Never quite got a grip on the popularity of strip records. Guess they were a platform for the middle class of the 60's to be a bit risque and participate in the sexual revolution from the comforts of their living rooms in Scarsdale. I dunno.....
This LP is confounding in that it features the obligatory bar band, sleazy emcee and the sounds of drunken patrons urging the bump and grind of a performer named "Doll-ie". Standards such as "Misty" and "Blues in the Night" are featured with the typical heavy handed drummer. Aural Porn for the masses.

Strike One

Lew Burdette, a crafty right hander for the Milwaukee Braves was the MVP of the '57 World Series. Known for his outstanding control, the Nitro, West Virgina native was often accused of throwing the illegal spitball. Sportswriter Red Smith was once quoted as saying, "There should be 3 pitching statistics for Burdette: Wins, Losses, and Relative Humidity."
Burdette was also a bit of a practical joker posing as a lefty in this 1959 Topps card.
Lew shows a bit less control in this number recorded in 1959. Another in a short list of baseball player recording fails.

Thanks to my Facebook buddy, Radiolux Franky for the goodness.

The Big Guava

This week half of the American political circus comes to Tampa, Florida and there's more to the Tampa Bay area than Joe Redner, the Shuffleboard Hall of Fame and Rondo Hatton's grave — as this 1976 promotional film will show you.

In the early '90s I lived in Tampa while pursuing studies at the University of Sun and Fun and Tampa's public access cable was a goldmine of visual delights from Carol H. Sudler IV's (AKA Harrison) award-winning Chatterbox talkshow to GG Allin videos shown by Suzy Morbid (now DJ Suzy Solar) and, of course, the legendary Sondra Prill.

Gag Boxes

I've always had a thing for gag boxes. I recall my dad having an enviable collection of adult novelty boxes that he would carefully keep hidden from the Yuma youth brigade (we knew exactly where they were hidden and took great care, after ogling, to replace them in the exact same corner of the upper closet shelf.)

Collectors Weekly interviews Mardi & Stan Timm about their collection of gag box novelties, many produced by the H. Fishlove and Co. and the brains of the operation - Irving Fishlove.
Here's a few from their collection:

Watermelon Men

The Tao of Watermelon is a curious thing. Many a man has tried to define it, few have succeeded. In these two clips we can see the divergent philosophies associated with the Watermelon conundrum. The Oklahoma state vegetable is Watermelon which furthers our bewilderment, as it is typically thought of as a fruit. I'll let you, gentle readers, ponder that as you listen and learn.

Sunshine Rabbits

Sunshine Rabbits is a band from my town Malmö, Sweden. Claiming to be the "founders of fur pop got soul" they are a quite spectacular party band. Their mix of re-cycled disco beats, energy and pure girl power is smittening. They are like the bad seeds of The Spice Girls on a guerrilla war for more fun for real party people. The videos are good fun!
Here is their video for "Asassynation" from their debut album.

If you liked this be sure to also check out another gem from their new album, "Agneta", and their "Colour of the Fur" from 2008. Both are great fun to watch!

Sweet Daddy

"Mr. Irresistible."
Sweet Daddy Siki  is a former championship 'rassler who was a terror in the squared circle. Born in Texas, he emigrated to Canada in the early 60's where his legion of followers packed the Maple Leaf Gardens to witness him deploy his signature "coco butt" move.
In this action shot, Siki, and "The Sheik", are working over Handsome Johnny Barend.

During the latter years of his pro wrestling career, Sweet Daddy released a series of  serviceable country music records that largely featured covers of Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash and Charley Pride tunes. The LP "Sweet Daddy Siki Squares Off With Country Music" is a favorite of record cover collectors.

Amazingly enough, Sweet Daddy can still be seen and heard weekly leading the karaoke show at the "Duke", a  Toronto bar situated on Queen Street East and Leslie. Neat article about his royal highness at 501 Queen Streetcar
Special thanks to  Kliph Nesteroff for the assist.

Doin' the Creep

I love Alvin Cash. When he's not urging you to "form a big boss line," exclaiming "lawd have mercy!" or moaning "aww baby!" he's getting berated by his backup singers. Alvin Cash records are great because you're right there in the room with him. "It's me, Alvin!" or "I'm back again!" he'll shout just in case you didn't know who you were listening to for a second. Alvin is always trying a new dance.

In this one, a genie-like voice busts him right from the beginning...creepin'

Radio, Radio

The transistor radio changed the face of the way we listen to music. Billions of them were produced in the 50's and 60's. The first mass produced, portable music device exposed a generation to the glory of rock and roll (provided you had a case of 9 volt batteries to power). Lo-Fidelity and subject to regular disruptions in service due to the nuances of the AM frequencies it showcased, the device was, nonetheless, revolutionary.
Sarah has an astounding collection which highlights the boss designs of the era.

Failed Dance Crazes - Part XXIV

"The greatest new dance craze to capture the public's imagination is the Monkey Dance or Monkey Music. The dancers are allowed a great deal of freedom as they move about to exciting riffs and back beats. The Dials, a great new group out of Nashville, generate a new kind of excitement as they tear through 12 great songs with the authentic feel."

Custer's Last Man

One of the first releases by Motown Records was this unusual composition by Popcorn and The Mohawks. "Custer's Last Man" is in summary, a mess. The song is a twisted tale of soldiers who find an old soldier digging a hole. Said old soldier proceeds to spin a saga about the Lakota Indians and their victorious campaign over Custer at the Little Big Horn complete with itsy-bitsy teeny-weeny yellow polka-dot bikini calls and gibberish about yogis. Dying warriors tell their enemies to "Tell Laura I Love Her". I'll stop while I'm ahead.......

Chinatown, My Chinatown

Some time ago Baikinange posted about The Kidoodlers. Now here comes the follow-up post. This soundie reveals the greatness that was The Kidoodlers. I see this rather as a tribute to Chinese culture and language than mockery. This is good fun! Though not politically correct. Well, those were the days. We live in another world now.

If you liked this as much as me just go ahead and enjoy "Little Brown Jug", another fun soundie from these sharp gents.

The House of Guitars

The Store That Ate My Brain is the House of Guitars. A fixture in Irondequoit, a suburb of Rochester, NY. Since 1972, the HOG has been billed as the "largest guitar store in the world". Founded by brothers Armand and Bruce Schaubroeck, the store has hosted in-store appearances by Metallica, The Ramones, Ozzy Ozbourne and hundreds of other acts whose graffiti and promo materials line the walls of the cavernous site. Loved and loathed by many in the Rochester community for it's flea market like inventory and total disarray, it's nonetheless a local treasure, worth a trip if you're ever in the area.
During the 70's and 80's the HOG was known for it's offbeat, trippy commercials that starred the brothers Schaubroeck and guests.

The Mickey Katz Project

The comedic stylings of Mickey Katz have been a mainstay of the PCL  legacy for many years. Some of his greatest shticks include Borscht Riders in the Sky,  Barber of Schlemiel and She'll Be Coming 'Round the Katzkills.
Filmmaker Eric Krasner is making a documentary on the King of The Borscht Belt. A long overdue tribute to an American icon. He could use your help in getting the film completed so if it is in your heart go the The Mickey Katz Project page and send him a few shekels.
You'll be a better person for it.
